Name: Jiho Park
Age: 18
Location: Irvine, CA
The Innovation: Computational drug discovery methods to develop faster and cheaper techniques to identify drugs against orphan diseases.
Brief Bio: Jiho spent the early years of his life in South Korea and Singapore, but now resides in Irvine, California. Currently, he is a freshman at Harvard College, and plans to concentrate in Molecular and Cellular Biology. During high school, his research on aromatase, a protein involved in many types of breast cancer, earned him second place at the 2013 International BioGENEius Challenge and a finalist position at the 2014 Intel Science Talent Search. He hopes to earn a doctorate in biochemistry and work on the discovery and development of drugs targeting orphan diseases.
Developments: Jiho’s project involves using advanced computational methods to identify potential drugs against proteins involved in a variety of diseases. He previously worked on incorporating protein flexibility to discover novel druggable sites in aromatase, a protein involved in many types of breast cancer. Currently, Jiho is working on fragment-based computational methods to discover inhibitors that have wide inhibitory activity against various HIV protease mutants. He hopes to use his experience in computational drug discovery and development to develop faster and cheaper techniques to identify drugs against orphan diseases.
